Importance of Switching Off

November 20, 2017

Yesterday I was reminded of the importance of taking some time out for yourself to clear your head and regroup.

We had a planned power outage in our area and even though I knew it was happening, I was still a little annoyed that I wouldn’t be able to get any work done for majority of the day. Eventually I just had to acknowledge that it was out of my control and I might as well turn it into a positive as best I could!

I took a drive out to John Forrest National Park, where there was no cell phone signal, no internet, just Mother Nature and sunshine. And it was perfect. I realised I wasn’t worried that I hadn’t checked my emails or that calls weren’t able to get through, I was completely switched off and enjoying every minute of it. I went home that afternoon full of energy and clarity for the week ahead and wondered why I didn't do this more often.

In our fast paced society it’s so easy to get caught up in our day-to-day stresses and forget to take a moment to switch off and breathe. It's almost as though it is frowned upon as physical progress is a measure of our success. We are addicted to being on the go, wanting constant approval from those around us and believing that this is normal. Not only does this take it's toll on our physical health, but our emotional and mental health also.

So, as scary as it may sound, I urge you all to take a day or even just a few hours a week to switch off and let your body recover! Create margin in your life in order to find a healthy work-life balance and enjoy the relief it creates!
